THE MOON AND SIXPENCE by W. SOMERSET MAUGHAM. This is a nicely preserved specimen, representing Modern Library when that company was going through rapid changes as far as the design of its books was concerned. We have an older, 1950s jacket design, with a printed price that was used from 1962 - 1965, and a cover design that was used in 1963. All of these point to Modern Library using existing stock and combining older styles with newer. The cover design is the clincher for dating the book, since it was used for a much narrower time span. ************************ The dust-jacket blurb: The fame of W. Somerset Maugham rests securely on three novels. The first, Of Human Bondage , has steadily maintained its position as one of the novels in greatest demand on the entire Modern Library list. The second, Cakes and Ale , is the author's own favorite, and the third, The Moon and Sixpenc , has won an enormous following and is as popular as its celebrated predecessors. This story of Charles Strickland, driven by the demon of his genius to the South Seas, parallels in many ways the strange life of Paul Gauguin. ************************** SERIES : Modern Library # 27 / TITLE : The Moon and Sixpence / AUTHOR : W.
