The Moonstone (1868) is an early example of the modern detective novel, and established many of the ground rules of the modern genre The story was originally serialized in Charles Dickens's magazine All the Year Round, and is probably Willkie Collins' best known workYellowbacks were cheap novels which were published in Britain in the second half of the 19th century and were occasionally called "mustard-plaster" novels They were developed in the 1840s to compete with the "penny dreadful" and marketed as entertaining reading They had brightly colored covers, often printed by chromoxylography, which were attractive to a new class of readers, thanks to the spread of education and rail travel Because yellowbacks were so cheaply made, they have not survived well, and therefore they are now quite scarce Many copies have been rebound over the years as the bindings deteriorated, and so copies with original bindings are even rarerThis copy is still in its original multicolored illustrated covers on (originally) white (now soiled and darkened) paper board The spine cloth has chipped and separated, but is mostly complete The binding is still intact, though loose Front hinge is cracked and rear hinge starting The initial endpaper, which had commercial ads, is missing, but all the rest of the text is complete and unmarked Pages are age toned, but otherwise in very good condition 2 p of publisher's ads precede the text, and a 32 p publisher's catalog (dated November 1886) follow, with commercial ads on the last flyleaf and both pastedowns The ink signature of an early owner (E H Galsworthy) is at the top of the title page [Topp 635] 12mo 2/0 boards 434 + 36 p ads pp. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers AA1858
