Child's views on censoring the reading of adolescents (she recommends Bowdler's Shakespeare) seem as outlandish to us as her ideas on punsihment: "Small children may be tied in an arm-chair, sent out of the room and forbidden to return, put to bed without supper, etc." Very sensibly, she adds, " Never undertake to make a child do a thing unless you are very sure you can make him do it." A fascinating window into the education of children in nineteenth century America. Child was best known as an abolitionist and a suffragette, and for writing "Over the River and Through the Woods." Mild dampstaining to first ten and last ten pages, and also pp. 40-70. Cloth-back boards lightly stained, and quite worn at extremities. Title written on spine with ink.
