From printed label on back of frame: "Bois original grave par Jean Chieze utilise pour le tirage de Hippocrate edite par L'Union Latine D'Editions - Paris". A 4 5/8" x 6 5/8", mounted, original woodblock, engraved by Jean Chieze, and used to illustrated the edition of Hippocrates published in Paris (ca. 1950's). This block is an elaborate study of early surgical instruments & an "anatomical" woman seated in an open cabinet; her abdomen has been dissected to reveal, uterus, kidneys, bladder, etc. The top and open doors of this cabinet are hung with various types of surgical instruments; in front of this cabinet a table top displays 15-20 other early instruments that might have been used in early obstetric surgery (in caesarian section, etc.), including bone saw, mallet, syringe, forceps, scalpels, knives, sponge, flask, suture thread, etc. Many of these instruments & the entire illustration has a 16th century medical/anatomical appearance. The background of the wooden block has been covered in white pigment & then the raised surfaces of the engraving have been brushed with black ink, so the image can be viewed as an illustration. The block has been mounted in a recessed panel, which has been covered in a maroon velvet backing & placed into a standing or hanging 8 ¼ " x 10 ½ " (x 1" deep); black-surfaced, wooden frame, with surfaces of panel and woodblock set below the open (unglazed) front of the frame; the back of the frame is covered in black fabric & has a mounted brass ring for hanging the piece, and also, a sturdy, fold-out flap, which opens out, so the frame can stand on a flat surface. Underneath the flap is pasted the printed French title label (text given above), identifying the block. Back surface of frame shows slight rubbing, light scratches, edges of frame show a little rubbing off of black paint, else in fine condition, with no cracks or slashes through woodblock. We have been unable to determine if any other of the blocks illustrating this edition were themselves framed & issued as an edition. A very striking (and slightly fantastic) medical image that might not be suitable for display in all locations, but a beautiful & delicately cut example of Chieze's wood-engraving. Wood-engraver Jean Chieze (1898-1975) illustrated Cervantes, Poe, Erasmus & many other classic authors. Rare item! Weight: 2 lbs. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers ABE-169743738
