In good condition. Spine has been nicely rebacked, darkened but intact. Gilt work is faded, but intact on spine. Boards exhibit light wear. Fresh end papers. Interior lightly toned. some sporadic foxing, heavier in certain areas than others. Paint on illustrations is bright and clean. Free of markings or ownership. Binding tight and intact. A nicely restored text. Please see photos. Robert Smith Surtees was a popular sporting writer, beginning his writing career by contributing to the Sporting Magazine . This is his most famous novel with his hero character Soapey Sponge , being as popular as his comic character Jorrocks, featured in numerous novels, including Handley Cross . Illustrated by John Leech, a caricaturist best known for his for Punch . He also illustrated editions of Charles Dickens works including the first edition of A Christmas Carol. Undated, dated from copies on Copac held at the National Trust, and also by the publisher's address; Bradbury, Agnew & Co were based on Bouverie St around 1867 to 1873, based on information from the British Library.
