Original Murray Family Library series edited by John Gibson Lockhart. 59 (of 78) volumes from the series offered for sale; comprising 36 pf the 49 titles, published by John Murray and Thomas Tegg from 1829 to 1842. There are 4 partial sets as noted in the listing. 12mo, the volumes are bound in matching brown pebbled leather with gilt titles on spine. Many volumes have engraved frontispieces Fold out maps are featured in several, with additional plates and engravings. The dates of the volumes published by John Murray, with Thomas Tegg as a distributor are noted in bibliographic sources as 1829 to 1834, with Tegg taking over publication in 1834. This collection goes through 1842. It has been checked against several listings. The collaboration seems to have been more ongoing than is indicated in the literature. There are volumes later than 1834, with John Murray as publisher, and a few with both names up to 1840. Illustrations are not collated for each volume, editions may differ. The volumes are tight, and in very good condition. The Murray series were a force in the democratization of knowledge in mid-century Britain.
