PROFUSELY ILLUSTRATED in full color and black-and-white photography (many full or double-page) with accompanying descriptive captions. From the Foreword by John Train: "Do not the greatest sculpture gardens stand at the pinnacle of the world's art in the seriousness of their intent and the power they exert upon the beholder? I have in mind certain sacred places, such as Stonehenge or the Ryoanji Temple Garden, where deep religious feeling combines with plastic beauty to create harmonious forms without particular use of representation, which thus really are "music in stone." The rose window of the Sainte Chapelle is in these terms "music" in glass, more than the Chapel itself, which can also be judged as architecture. Another example would be the Ardebil carpet, in the Victoria And Albert Museum, before which I try to spend a rapt half-hour whenever I'm in London, and which again doesn't mean or represent anything: music in textile. "De la musique avant toute chose." as Mallarme said." 207 pages. *NOTE: Due to size/weight of book additional shipping will be required for out-of-U.S. shipment. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
