Together with The Elementary Class-Book, introductory to the Science of Musick.The music is in round notes, four parts.William Jarvis Edson (1786-1848) of Otsego, New York; an enterprising entrepreneur, Edson made some money manufacturing textiles during the War of 1812, when trade with England was prohibited. Afterwards he sold his property and lived for short periods at Oxford, NY, then Oneonta, NY, before purchasing 54 acrues from the Holland Land Company in Batavia, NY. This he farmed with his three sons while he began his career in music, publishing in 1827 the Musical Monitor, a book of tunes which included a section of singing instruction. It was published by Mack & Andrus at Ithaca NY; the publishers were the owners of the Ithaca Journal and General Adverstiser, and their promotion of the tunebook made it a success. "The public appreciation of the value of the two successive editions of the work, prefaced, as they severally were, by the Introduction to the Science of Musick, was immediate and wide-spread. It was a period when the art of singing by note was esteemed an acquirement of more than ordinary distinction.Singing-schools, particularly in winter, were flourishing or being organized wherever there were people sufficient in number to sustain them.
