Inhaltsangabe: A rash of pranks and mysterious accidents at an old ski lodge is investigated by teen-age sleuths who finally discover the surprising culprit.
From School Library Journal:
Grade 5-8 Kate's first ski trip seems headed toward disaster as mysterious pranks become sinister. Paths are made slippery, boots are put outside filled with water, and someone steals Kate's suitcase from her locked room. Rumors of ghostly happenings fly, but Kate is determined to discredit ``The Legend of Snowshoe Mountain.'' All staff members and guests in the Lodge become suspects after someone switches signs for the beginning and advanced trails. Kate is pursued down the advanced Death Valley Run by the culprit, Pixie, a ski instructor trying to sabotage the Lodge because she wasn't made head of the ski school. Characterization is shallow, especially that of Pixie, who is so frustrated in her ambition that she causes life-threatening situations to occur. However, the spooky setting (the old stone lodge was modeled after a Transylvania castle) and the mild romantic interest (Kate has a crush on two of her ski instructors) should hold readers' attention. Information about skiing is adequately woven into the story; however, it seems unlikely that Kate would be able to maneuver the advanced trail (twice in one day) during her first week on skis. Where undemanding mysteries are needed, this one is an adequate addition. Ellen Fader, Westport Public Library, Conn.
