No dust jacket. Johann Rudolf Rocker (1875-1958) was a German anarchist writer and activist. After the death of his mother and the remarriage of his stepfather, Rudolf was put into an orphanage. Although Rocker was initially raised to be a priest, he was repulsed by the unconditional obedience demanded by the Catholic orphanage. Drawn by the prospect of adventure, Rocker ran away from the orphanage twice. Under the influence of his uncle, he joined the SPD and became active in the typographers' labor union in Mainz. Rocker became increasingly worried about the rise of nationalism and fascism and would later be exiled from Nazi Germany. In the following years, Rocker became one of the most regular writers in the FAUD organ Der Syndikalist. He also published Pioneers of American Freedom, a series of essays in which he detailed the history of liberal and anarchist thought in the United States, seeking to debunk the idea that radical thought was foreign to American history and culture and had merely been imported by immigrants. The work offered here is a classic on anarchist thought. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 007193
