Separate vignette title page for The Antiquities of Selborne. Bound in half green morocco over green cloth boards, gilt; spine in compartments with raised bands, decorated gilt with gilt titles. Marbled green endpapers. Deckled edges. Bookseller's stamp of Sotheran, 37 Piccadilly, W. who commissioned the binding from Zaehnsdorf, whom they employed at this period. Spine faded and foxing, largely confined to edges and margins; otherwise a fine set. Loosely inserted: 1906 letter from editor on Natural History Museum notepaper. Illustrated by 99 plates with tissue guards, including one double page, 2 folding facsimiles and two portrait frontispieces, and by 66 text figures. Decorated by title page vignettes. A handsomely bound end of the nineteenth edition of this classic work of literature and natural history which has never been out of print since this its first appearance in 1789. The Natural History section is in the form of letters addressed to Thomas Pennant and Daines Barrington. The Antiquities section, describing the history of the parish of Selborne, is also in epistle format but not addressed to known correspondents. Volume One includes the Pennant letters and the Garden Kalendar (here printed in its entirety for the first time, with introduction by Samuel Reynolds Hole, Dean of Rochester from 1887); Volume Two the Barrington letters and the Antiquities, with Appendices in Latin, the Bibliography and the Index. Edited by Richard Bowdler Sharpe (1847-1909), Curator of the Bird Collection at the Natural History Museum, London (see enclosed letter). The plates include many fine studies of birds by the famous Dutch ornithological illustrator, Johannes Gerardus Keulemans (1842-1912), who lived and worked in England. (Martin. p. 177-179).
