SECOND EDITION 1882, fifteenth thousand, 8vo, approximately 195 x 115 mm, 7¾ x 4½ inches, some wood engraved illustrations and diagrams in the text, pages: x, 519 including index, plus 32 page catalogue dated January 1882, bound in the original publisher's zigzag pattern dark green cloth, blind stamped border to covers, gilt decoration and gilt lettering to spine, original mid brown endpapers. A touch of wear at tail of spine, tiny dent in middle of spine, top corner of upper cover very slightly bumped, hinges inside covers intact, light fading to the coloured endpapers and some pale age-browning, light browning to reverse of endpapers and second blank front endpaper, faint browning to title page and Contents table, no inscriptions, text pages bright and clean throughout, small pale brown stain on first page of catalogue at rear, no loss of legibility. A very good plus copy. This is Darwin's first published book and is the most often read and stands second only to The Origin of Species as the most often printed. Referred to universally today as the Voyage of the Beagle, it is an important travel book in its own right and its relation to the background of Darwin's evolutionary ideas has often been stressed. See Freeman, The Works of Charles Darwin, pages 31-36 and No. 38. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE. FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 48875

Twentieth Thousand with Portrait. Publisher's original green cloth, variant a. with rhea hunt gilt vignette on upper board and price of 3/6 also in gilt on spine. Octavo. [1] 2-388; pp. [2], [frontispiece portrait], xii, 13-615, [1]. Woodcut text illustrations, A book in Very Good condition with a tiny bookseller's label to foot of front pastedown, and light spotting to prelims, portrait and endpapers. Overall of very nice copy of a seminal work. Freeman states that this issue did not have the price on the spine, but this example does. Freeman 49 does have the price in gilt on the spine but no thousand is given and it has many fewer pages [x + 519] than this example. The 1889 John Murray issues are the only ones to have, as a variant binding, the rhea hunt in gilt on the front board. Darwin's journal of his voyage on the Beagle first appeared as the third volume of Captain FitzRoy's 'The Narrative of the Voyages of H.M. Ships Adventure and Beagle' (1839). It immediately reappeared as a separate book under its own lettering. Dedicated to Charles Lyell in recognition of his ". well known and admirable." 'Principles of Geology', the journal sketches a history of the voyage through Darwin's examinations of the natural history, people and geology of each destination. Freeman 50.
