Beschreibung
Viii, [1], 400, pages. 225 x 155 mm. In German. Volume I of a three-volume set. Rebound with original leather label repasted onto the new spine. This book was in the library of the very prominent Rabbi Dr. Simon Hevesi of Budapest. (1868-1943) was Rabbi of the Pest Jewish community since 1905. During his incumbency he was responsible for the development of Jewish culture and education throughout Hungary and was active in welfare and religious organizations. At the time of his death he was president of the Rabbinical Association of Hungary. During the chaotic post-war years in Hungary and in the period after 1929 when violent anti-Semitic activity was resumed, Dr. Hevesi was instrumental in saving the Jewish population from much humiliation and persecution. In 1939, before the outbreak of the war, Dr. Hevesi visited the United States where he received the honorary degree of Doctor of Hebrew Letters from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. He wrote numerous studies on religious and philosophical subjects in Hebrew, Hungarian and German. Bibliographical notes at end. Series: Schriften hrsg. Von der Gesellschaft zur förderung der wissenschaft des judentums. Grundriss der gesamtwissenschaft des judentums. Martin Philippson (1846-1916) was "a historian and a communal leader. Born at Magdeburg, Philippson was appointed assistant professor at Bonn in 1875, and soon thereafter was designated professor of modern history. However, when Emperor William I would not sanction the appointment of a Jew, Martin took a professorship at the University of Brussels (1878) , and eventually became rector there. In 1891 he was forced to resign this post in the face of agitation by anti-German and radical students, and returned to Berlin. Thereafter he devoted his energies to Jewish communal affairs and to his writing. He was chairman of the Deutsch-Israelitischer Gemeindebund (1896-1912) , chairman of the Gesellschaft zur Foerderung der Wissenschaft des Judentums (1902) ; and chairman of the Verband der deutschen Juden (1904) . He also headed the Lehranstalt fuer die Wissenschaft des Judentums, which commissioned his three-volume Neueste Geschichte des juedischen Volkes. " (Herbert A. Strauss, EJ).
