Three issue of the short lived anti-Mormon newspaper, Salt Lake Daily Review. Billing itself as "Independent in all things, neutral in nothing", the papers ran from August 9, 1871 through February 14, 1872, daily except Sunday. These three issues are for November 28, 1871, December 4, 1871 and January 16, 1872. The first newspaper is completely separated at the fold, the second is nearly completely separated at the fold; the third with loss of 1/2 x 2" at the inner edge affecting a bit of the text.~~Each newspaper carries notices of the trial of Brigham Young at the time; Young was being tried under an 1862 law that prohibited polygamy in the territories; though he had married more than twenty wives, he was acquitted. ~~The lead in the December 4 paper was "Adultery Must be Put Down" and states "We are not aware that Utah has ever been ceded to Brigham Young or to the Mormon Church," In the Court Proceedings section of the December 4 paper, is given an account of wrangling in the court re Young s failure to appear: "The court inquired of Mr. Hempstead if he could say definitely when Brigham Young would be here. Mr. Hempstead stated that he could not inform the court this morning. He had, however, every reason to believe that if some time in January, or early February, were fixed, the defendant would be here." ~Mr. Bates, the District Attorney, is reported to have opposed postponement beyond that time as "These are the most important cases ever to have been tried in the country." [page 2]~~On January 6, 1872, Brigham Young was indicted for murder and was imprisoned, pending trial, in his own house. The January 15 paper commented: "In allowing Brigham Young, a prisoner before his court charged with the murder of an inoffensive person, to select his place of confinement during the trial, Judge McKean has acted very leniently. Any other prisoner, under similar circumstances, would be confined in solitary, with bread and water as his food, and rats and vermin as his companions."~~It is clear where the Salt Lake Daily Review stood on the matter of Brigham Young.~~Issues of the Daily Review are uncommon.~~.
