An important and rare account of a mission undertaken during the Mexican-American War to determine the feasibility of opening steamboat communications with Presidio Rio Grande, which was a point of intersection on the Rio Grande for traffic between Monclova and San Antonio. Tilden and his party started from Camargo, at the mouth of the Rio San Juan, on Oct. 1, 1846, less than one week after the Battle of Monterrey, and travelled almost 300 miles up the Rio Grande to the Presidio. From Laredo it was necessary to travel by horseback. This pamphlet gives an account of the journey, with descriptions of the region and many towns along the route, including Laredo, Mier, and Presidio de Rio Grande. Not in Tutorow. GRAFF 4151.
