Copper-engraved map, platemark 7 x 11 inches, on a 9 1/2 x 13-inch sheet. A clean, strong impression. Fine. Matted. One of only one hundred restrikes of this famous and dramatic map of central Mexico, made from the original copper plate (and thus a first edition, second issue printing). The image, rendered by Antonio Ysarti in a striking and unusual combination of bird's- eye view and traditional map, was originally printed for Balthasar de Medina's 1682 CHRONICA DE LA SANTA PROVINCIA DE SAN DIEGO DE MEXICO, and is one of the earliest copper engravings executed in Mexico. The plate was updated at some time after the 1682 publication, possibly for a later publication which was never printed, with an additional two convents named in the cartouche, Valladolid added at center left, and the date removed from the bottom border. The map itself depicts the ecclesiastical province of San Diego, a region spanning central Mexico from the Gulf to the Pacific, labeling and illustrating ports and convents in a highly stylized manner. The original copper plate surfaced in the 1970s and is now held in the Library of Congress. A clean, strong modern impression of this rare and important map, pulled from the original copper plate. All citations refer to Medina's 1682 CHRONICA: JCB II, p.102. HEREDIA 6818. MEDINA, MEXICO 1250. PALAU 159373. SABIN 2987, 47336. STREETER SALE 137. WAGNER SPANISH SOUTHWEST 55.
