4to. 10.25 x 6 inches, in frame 13.5 x 9.5 inches. [2] pp. Text in double columns. Mounted in glazed oak frame, with both sides of Gazette visible. Some browning of paper and few spots of foxing, some of which have become small holes, without, however, significantly affecting overall legibility. Fine oak framed copy of an historic newspaper dating from 1690, recording events leading up to the Battle of the Boyne. The London Gazette was the official government newspaper (dating from 1665-66) for May 1690. This issue relates to an early phase in the Nine Years War (or War of the League of Augsburg), 1689- 97, fought mainly in the Low Countries and Germany, but also in North America. A Grand Alliance was formed between the Empire, the Dutch Republic and England to oppose the expansionist ambitions of Louis XIV of France. William of Orange, Stadtholder of the Netherlands, had also been King of England since the Glorious Revolution of 1688, ruling jointly with his wife, Mary II, daughter of the deposed James II. Her birthday celebrations at the Hague are described in the Gazette. News reports come from Rome, Milan, Madrid, Hamburg, Paris and Vienna, whose forces were engaging the Turks as far east as Romania. Warlike preparations by Brandenburg and the Imperial armies are noted from Cologne. The movements of merchant convoys are reported from Cadiz (the English Convoy, the Levant Merchant and the Rotterdam convoy). Dutch vessels brought French prizes into Weymouth and Plymouth, including a French Prize 'laden with Sugars from the West-Indies, and bound for Nantes.' In Ireland the Williamite War was in progress. A French fleet, which had landed forces in Ireland to support the Jacobite cause had recently returned from Cork to Brest. Similar preparations in England involved the marching of Dutch cavalry to Kirkcudbright to embark for Ireland while about sixty merchant ships with stores for Ireland sailed from Portsmouth in a convoy with a naval escort. In Ireland itself the advancing Jacobites, 'having passed the Bogs, which are now in many places dry,'skirmished with government troops around Lisburn in the north. In the following months, further Protestant forces arrived in Ireland, culminating in the Battle of the Boyne on 1st July. On the same day the French defeated the English at the Battle of Beachy Head and a French army was successful against the coalition at Fleurus iin the Spanish Netherlands. A section at the end of the Gazette labelled Advertisements, includes books, chronological tables and paintings for sale, but also notes some crimes in and around the capital. A woman has a Two Quart Silver Tankard snatched in York-buildings and on the Uxbridge Road several mounted highwaymen rob two wagons of numerous articles of costly apparel.
