Nakaa's Awakening: Land of Matang (Book One)
Stacey M. King
Towards the end of the nineteenth century, one of the richest phosphate deposits ever found was discovered on a remote Central Pacific island called Ocean Island — known to its people as Banaba. In its path stood some four hundred and fifty indigenous Banabans, whose homeland was about to be transformed forever.
The year is 1900, and John Williams travels from Australia to Banaba to supervise the extraction of the phosphate. His wife Ella and their two-year-old daughter Gwennie follow to begin a new life. Ella arrives unprepared and deeply shaken by the strange new world she finds — but her initial shock gives way to something deeper, and she grows to love the island and its people, coming to care about their plight as the mining slowly destroys their beautiful home.
While John oversees the hundreds of indentured labourers brought to the island, Ella and Gwennie come to know the Banaban people, their culture and their beliefs. Their houseboy, Tetabo, teaches Gwennie about his people's magic and mysteries and their connection to the spirits of their ancestors. John fears his daughter is growing up like a native and wants to send her to school in Australia, but Ella refuses. Loyal to the mining company yet increasingly uneasy at how his superiors treat the island and its people, John finds himself pulled in every direction — challenged by discontent and riots among the imported workers, troubled by the Banabans' growing anxiety, and unsettled by the changes overtaking his own family.
Based on the author's researched family history, Nakaa's Awakening is a story of conflicting loyalties, cultural differences and a family adjusting to a wholly new environment while destructive mining threatens the near-extinction of the Banaban race. Weaving together history, biography and fictional reconstruction — drawn from hundreds of old family photographs and documents, and using Banaban words and the island's original place names — it lets us share the experiences and colliding viewpoints of people whose values and beliefs are worlds apart, while an unstoppable international juggernaut moves behind the scenes.
The survival of the Banaban people into the twenty-first century is a triumph of the human spirit over industrial might. Still they believe that good will overcome evil, as they struggle to endure the wrath of the evil spirit Nakaa and his Awakening. Yet, though Matang was lost forever, a cherished tradition held that the ancestor gods had promised to return to their children one day — wherever they might be…
Nakaa's Awakening is the opening novel of the Land of Matang series, four books spanning a hundred years of colonial occupation and the epic story of one small island, its people, and the phosphate that changed everything.
Praise for Nakaa's Awakening
"Historical fiction at its best!" — Jeremy Cooper, freelance media producer (UK), who praised the story as by turns sad and uplifting, sparing the reader nothing while neither condemning nor justifying, and called it an enchanting historical read he recommends to anyone drawn to the Pacific.
One reader described it as an effective blend of historical fact and well-written narrative that brought the history alive, with the Banaban words and rich description placing them right there on the island, participating in the characters' lives.
Reviewed through the Wishing Shelf Book Awards, where readers rated it highly for being easy to follow and singled out the author's deep subject knowledge as a particular strength.
