This was Melville's first work and was published simultaneously in New York and London--one of the first books so issued. John Murray was the first to recognize Melville and obtained the prior rights of publication. Not only was this English edition of, what is now better known as, Typee, issued earlier than the American, it contains passages deleted from the latter ?to meet American squeamishness.?---Wilson. Cloth. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Classic Book Club Edition. In his account of the singular and interesting people among whom he was thrown, it will be observed that the author chiefly treats of their more obvious peculiarities; and, in describing their customs, refrains in most cases from entering into explanations conercing their origin and purposes. There are some things related in the narrative which will be sure to appear stange, or perhaps entirely incomprehensible. to the reader; but they cannot appear more so to him that they did to the author at the time. He has stated such matters just as they occured, and leaves every one to form his own opinion concerning them, trusting that his anxious desire to speak the unvarnished truth will gain for him the confidence of his readers. 319 pp. Some wear to cover. Corners of cloth slightly bumped. Sunned spine. A very good copy for its age.(We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.).
