First edition, edited from Aubrey's MSS in the Ashmolean by Richard Rawlinson. Five volumes octavo (19 x 12.5cm), some volumes dated 1718. 'The value of Aubrey's work lies in his careful observation of the places he visited and in his diligent transciption of epitaths, many of which were destroyed in the next century.'- Currie & Lewis. Vol. I, pp. [vi],xlviii,[12],258,[6]; Vol. II, pp. [1-2],3-307,[1],viii; Vol. III, pp. [1-2],3-368,[8]; Vol. IV, pp. [1-2],279,[1],[8]; Vol. V, pp. [1-2],3-416,[4]. With a frontispiece portrait (neatly laid down on the endpaper), folding map, folding view of Richmond Palace, folding view of Albury, folding letterpress genealogy of the Evelyn family (slighty trimmed, but no loss), two engravings on the letterpress & eight plates of marble fragments, some with slight trimming to the margins. Slight loss to blank margin of p.265 second volume, no loss to text. With an additional plate on the letterpress p.152 third volume & opposite p.282 second volume, neither noted by Upcott nor present in the Bodleian copy. An excellent set in contemporary full calf, with labels, gilt, the joints on the first volume & leading joint final volume slighty cracked, final volume slightly worn head of spine, some general light rubbing but the whole quite sound & tight.
