From the German of Anton Kerner von Marilaun and translated by British botanist Francis Wall Oliver.Marilaun emphasised the concept of plant sociology and often examined historical factors in the distributions of plant species.Volumes I-II contain the 'Biology and Configuration of Plants', with studies of plants in ancient and modern times, carnivorous plants, chlorophyll, light sensitivity and more.Volumes III-IV contain the 'History of Plants', with studies of buds on leaves, dispersion of pollen, species and races, alpine and arctic floras and more.Richly illustrated throughout with an array of woodcuts from numerous artists. Uniformly bound in half morocco, with cloth boards. Externally, excellent, with minor shelf wear and the odd mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound.
