The Necromancer or The Tale of the Black Forest (The Northanger Set of Jane Austen Horrid Novels). Lg octavo, textblock measuring approx. 9.75" x 5.8." xviii, 157 [158]pp. Description: "The Necromancer; or, The Tale of the Black Forest is a Gothic novel written by Karl Friedrich Kahlert under the alias Lawrence Flammenberg and translated by Peter Teuthold that was first published in 1794. It is one of the seven 'horrid novels' lampooned by Jane Austen in Northanger Abbey.[1] It was once thought not to exist except in the text of Northanger Abbey. Set in the Black Forest in Germany, the novel consists of a series of lurid tales of hauntings, violence, killings and the supernatural featuring the adventures of Hermann and Helfried and the mysterious wizard Volkert the Necromancer, who has seemingly come back from the dead." Shopbeschreibung

We buy and sell primarily out of print, collectible and rare books. We sell online and at rare book fairs; we do not have a store location. I started in the book trade in 1980, cutting my teeth at two of the most venerable bookstores in the country, Powell's Bookstore, Portland, OR., and Acres of Books, Long Beach, CA. I started my own store, William James-Bookseller, in 1987, in the scenic and culturally vibrant seaport town of Port Townsend, WA., selling the shop in 2012 to Paul Stafford. I have since operated online, and I also handle rare and collectible books for La Playa Books, San Diego, CA. Thank you for shopping with us! …
