Beschreibung

Small Folio. 257 (1)pp. Original orange wraps with black ruling and lettering on cover. The American architect Louis Henry Sullivan formulated the phrase "form follows function" in 1890 and these principles, applied first on a large scale by the Chicago School of Architecture in housing and office architecture, became the basis for Neues Bauen. Erwin Anton Gutkind, who coined the term Neues Bauen with this publication, presented this account in cooperation with various architects and government officials responsible for urban and rural planning. It includes contributions on economic, technical, and artistic fundamentals with detailed information on administrative regulations and agencies. Illustrated with architectural drawings, plans, tables and diagrams throughout. Text in German, Gothic script. Wraps with wear, small chips, tears and creasing along edges and corners. Some rubbing and minor stains. Some light foxing in block, mostly at foredge and some creasing of upper right corner. Wraps in overall good, interior in good+ to very good condition. Early examples of Neues Bauen in Europe point to architecture executed before WW I. Examples are Walter Gropius and Adolf Meyer's Fagus Factory (1911) or Hans Poelzig's department store in Breslau (1912), using glass surfaces and severe geometric compositions. Parallel developments in architecture are De Stijl in the Netherlands and Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity). The latter became known and famous as the Bauhaus architecture.
