636 pp. Full leather binding with leather spine label and gilt lettering. Front outer hinge cracked at the bottom. Boards still attached. Significant bowing of the text block (see pic), though a professional book binder with a press should be able to resolve this. INCLUDES the exceptionally scarce folding map. Map is complete, but it has been repaired with tape on the backside along some of the fold lines. Martin's Gazetteer is one of the best sources of information on pre-Civil War Virginia and the District of Columbia. As the subtitle notes, it "contains geographical, statistical, political, commercial, religious, moral and miscellaneous information collected and compiled from the most respectable and chiefly from original sources, along with a history of Virginia from its first settlement to the year 1754 as written expressly for the work by a Virginian." Using information consolidated from local contributors, Martin was able to provide exceptionally detailed essays about nearly all communities in Virginia and the District of Columbia including their boundaries, geology, scenery, topography and noteworthy natural attractions, weather, people, government, religion, education, militia, hospitals, prisons, industry, agriculture, finance, and much more.
