Beschreibung
A satire of Thomas Day's best-selling children's work of the same title by F. C. Burnand, with illustrations by Linley Sambourine. Satire inspired by Thomas Day's best-selling children's anthologyThe History of Sandford and Merton, first published anonymously in 1783, which retained much popularity through to the nineteenth century. This work was written by F. C. Burnand, with a preface that mentions it will "teach you what to don't."Featuring numerous illustrations-in text as well as full page plates by Linley Sambourne, English cartoonist and illustrator known for his contributions toPunch magazine, rising to the position of "first cartoonist" in his final decade. This work, as many children's works of the time, features characters and illustrations that stereotype and generalise cultures and backgrounds, with evident elements of racism. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally sound with minor shelf wear, bumped to head and tail of spine and extremities of the boards, spine lightly faded, with minor damp mark to front board, minor marks to spine and rear board. Internally, binding is generally firm, light spotting to odd leaf, otherwise pages generally bright and clean. With full page plates and illustrations in black and white. Very Good.
