Map. Engraving with original hand coloring. Image measures 14.75" x 11.75". This is a fine 1857 Colton map of New Jersey. Enclosed by the simple line border used by Colton from 1857 to 1859, it covers the state of New Jersey in its entirety, noting cities, towns, railways, roads, rivers, and other topographical features. Counties are delineated by color. Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware are visible, as well as New York City. In good condition. The Colton family was a leading 19th-century American map and atlas publisher, founded by Joseph Hutchins Colton (1800-1893) in New York City in 1831. Initially reissuing existing maps, Colton's firm quickly became known for high-quality guidebooks, railroad maps, and atlases. Their most notable works include "Colton's Atlas of the World" (1855) and "Colton's General Atlas" (1857), distinguished by detailed engravings and decorative borders. Joseph's sons, George and Charles, joined the business, helping it thrive despite financial setbacks. The firm continued publishing until 1901, leaving a lasting impact on American cartography. We are pleased to offer this map issued as part of Colton's General Atlas, published in 1865. The Civil War ended April 9, 1865 and this atlas was one of the first post-Civil War atlas' published. Art Source International is proud to offer this map from the 1859 edition of Coltons General Atlas. Colton atlases, especially those from the late 1850's, have become increasingly rare. The General Atlas was the first single edition atlas published by the Colton brothers succeeding the expensive two volume Atlas of the World. These maps have the signature ' inch Colton border surrounding each map. The Colton firm refused to compromise quality, choosing to compete for sales in the finer quality international market rather than the cheap domestic one. Because of this, all maps were engraved by steel plates rather than by wax engraving which was the most common method used at this time. This map of New Jersey is very detailed with identification of counties, cities, towns, common roads, rail roads, canals, and topographical features. For over 60 years the Colton family was the premier publisher of maps in the United States. J.H. Colton, the company founder, issued his first 'General Atlas' in 1855 and continued publishing this atlas until 1888. These are the first maps we have ever offered from his 1861 'General Atlas'. We believe these 1861 maps are some of his most difficult to find. Every collection should have at least one map by J.H. Colton. This map measures 14.5 inches by 17 inches.
