The New Universal Gazetteer; or Modern Geographical Dictionary. Containing a Full and Authentic Description of the Different Empires, Kingdoms, Republics, States, Provinces, Islands, Cities, Towns, Forts, Mountains, Caves, Caps, Canals, Rivers, Lakes, Oceans, Seas, Bays, Harbours, etc. in the Known World. By Joseph Scott and published in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by Patterson and Cochran. 8.75 x 5.5 , full leather. In overall good condition, with rubbing to leather binding and rounding of corners. Spinal labels attached. Hinges intact with slight wear. Text block securely affixed to boards. Some staining (primarily to tops of pages), toning, and foxing to pages, none of which compromises overall readability. One map or page appears to have been removed (please reference sixth photograph). Please see photographs and ask any questions prior to bidding. This is an extremely scarce piece of Joseph Scott s four-volume set. The most valuable part of these works is undoubtably the maps, of which Volume III contains maps of Kentucky, Maine (partially lost; please reference photos), Maryland, and Massachusetts. Some of these maps, especially Kentucky, are considered one of the earliest of their respective states, and this collection is potentially the first of state maps published within the United States. An extremely unique piece of early American geographic and cartographical history. COLU1800ABLK-variant. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers FORN-ABE-MSB-1021-Shelf-578-aj545
