Woodcut. Image measures 13 1/2" x 9 1/4". This rare engraved print depicts the Niagara Falls during winter and was issued in the March 5, 1881 edition of Harper's Weekly. The sheet includes several different views showing the world's most famous falls frozen in place turning the Niagara Falls into a beautiful frozen wonderland. The largest view in the center of the sheet is enclosed within a circle. Viewed from under the Canadian Falls, we can see magnificent stalactites of ice with people pointing and watching in awe. Four other views surrounding the center circle feature a grotto, Ice cone, Cave of the Winds, Great King and his court and a view on Luna Island. Drawn by W. H. Gibson. In good condition. Fragile paper. Minor wear and rips along edges, not affecting image. Top left corner of margin missing.Harper's Weekly was a New York-based illustrated political magazine published from 1857 until 1916. The magazine featured foreign and domestic news, fiction, essays on many subjects, and humor.
