A popular volume by the noteworthy Victorian sportswriter, the work contains eighteen colour plates by the likes of Illustrations in Colour and Half-tone after Ben Marshall, Henry Alken, Wolstenholme, R. B. Davis. Wm. Webb, H. D. Chalon, James Ward, R.A., etc. The tours described cover hunts in Leicestershire, Oxfordshire, Warwickshire, Surrey, Sussex, Dorset, Devon, Hampshire, The New Forest and Yorkshire. The author contributed to The Sporting Magazine, eventually his stories would be published in book form depicting themes related to fox hunting & horses. Publisher's Green cloth binding, rebacked with a new spine. Bindings are tight and square. Text clean, light even toning. Moderate shelf handling wear with corner rubs. 4to. 10.5 inches tall; 400 pages; Illustration in color with captioned tissue-guards. The guards have age-toned. . Background: Charles James Apperley (1777 - 19 May 1843), English sportsman and sporting writer, better known as Nimrod, the pseudonym under which he published his works on the chase and on the turf, was born at Plasgronow, near Wrexham, in Denbighshire, North Wales in 1777. Between the years 1805 and 1820 Apperley devoted himself to fox-hunting. From 1813 to 1819 he was the agent for his brother-in-law's estates and lived at Gwyn, Llanbeblig. Around 1821, under the pseudonym of "Nimrod", Apperley began to contribute a series of articles to The Sporting Magazine that covered horse races, hunt meets and other sporting events. His references to the personalities of the people he knew or met at such events helped to double the circulation of the magazine.
