Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers

J.A. BOLEN was born in New York City in 1826 and moved to Springfield, MA, in 1850. He is perhaps best known for his well-executed copies of American colonial coins, which have been at times mistaken as originals. His production was never intended to deceive. Bolen created the reproductions to aid collectors until they could afford to purchase originals. His reproductions are known to be highly collectable. In later years, he devoted his time to collecting old books, minerals, stamps and coins. He was a member of the American Numismatic and Archaeological Society from 1868 until his death on March 14, 1906. In this highly unusual and detailed ALS by Bolen to a Mr. Author, 4 pp, 5 ¼ x 8 ½, Springfield, Feb. 26th, 1870, Bolen describes what he feels is an important Native American artifact collection that was once in a museum and encourages his friend to purchase it. You spoke to me some time ago about Indian Relics for your cabinet and wished me to let you know of any that were to be sold. A friend of mine has just returned from the west and while there purchased a very valuable collection. He came back last night and was at my house today. He intends to sell them and a Gent. Stands ready to take them but I made him promise to give me the refusal of them until I could hear from you. He described them to me but there are so many of them that it is beyond my power to describe them. Suffice it to say they are all genuine and the most of them he has the history of especially the rare pieces. I enclose a sketch of three of the pieces as he drew them which he says are excessively rare. Nos. 1,2,3, that is about the shape of them. They are stone. No. 1 is cracked and tied together with a string. No. 2 has four heads cut and equal distances around. No 3 has places at the top to run with through and has been so suspended over a fire. In the whole collection, there are one hundred and fifty 150 pieces more or less. He wants $250 for the entire lot. It seems to me to be a rare opportunity to get a very fine lot cheap. They are all Indian including arrow heads, hatchets and four stone pipes. One of them is a pipe of peace which is rare. The reason I think they are cheap is this: The man who stands ready to take the lot, some two years ago, sold them for $550.00 cash and I have no doubt they would be glad to have this lot. He says if you don t want all of the three jugs, flaks, kettles or whatever you may call them that I send drawings of, you can take one or two of them and he will make a large deduction from the amount. He also says if you have any idea of buying them, he will ship them to you for inspection. They were collected in Wheeling, Va, Ohio, Missouri and other places in the West and some of the articles come from this locality. He describes them as being an extra nice lot and some of them are very rare. They or part of them were once in a museum in Pittsburgh. From there they went to an old Gent. In the West and my friend bought them from him. They will be here about next Tuesday. Let me hear from you as soon as that or as soon as convenient what you think of it. I know it is a chance seldom met with. Yours with respect JA Bolen [P.S.] I enclose s slip of paper with a New York firms name on. Will you have the kindness to look in the director and write the name and number of street. It is for a lady. I don t know if they are spelt right. I told her I would try to get the number. I suppose the word Yark is meant for York. Letter is in excellent condition. Punctuation added in the transcription for clarity. A rare example from this notable numismatic artist.…
