Todd Moberly's narrator was given what he only knows to call "the gift of an ear." For reasons unknown, he can recall most of the stories and anecdotes he ever heard from his elders, even some best forgotten. Call it a quirk, but it's real. These stories reflect their voices. They speak curiously turned phrases and old, forgotten words through his characters, and ,in doing so, preserve a generation’s tones, gestures, and facial expressions. Not only the spoken words of the narrator's grandparents, but those of all his elders, as he grew from boy to man in mid-20th century Kentucky, are captured in Notes on Cracker Barrel Napkins.
