This work acts a supplement to the 17th century 12 volume opus of Graevius on the same theme, and also brings together as many as 85 works from humanist & classical scholars, including a large section on the elephant in the Roman world by Gisbert Cuperus, here published for the first time. 'Sallengre, an ingenious and laborius writer.'- Watt. Vol. I, pp. [x],1328 cols.,[20], frontispiece & one plate; Vol. II, pp. [xiv],1448 cols.,[26], frontispiece & 15 plates; Vol. III, pp. [xviii],1252 cols.,[46], frontispiece & 2 folding plates. Large engraved vignettes & numerous engravings on the letterpress, including many of coins. Some occasional but not excessive browning to text. Two leaves mis-bound in the second volume, additional insert of columns [834]-[864] not noted by Rossetti in his very detailed collation, two cancelled leaves in the second volume, Xxx5 & Xxx6, as in the Kissner copy. Bound in contemporary calf, with some wear to heads of spine, small amount of loss to lower spines second & third volumes, a number of joints cracked, but quite sound & tight. Vg.
