In de moderne stad verplaatst zicht het leven van alledag zich steeds meer naar de binnenkant van gebouwen. De interieurs van de warenhuizen, markthallen, administratiegebouwen, musea of theaters worden onderdeel van de ervaring van de stedeling. Iedere binnenwereld van de stad heeft haar eigen karakter sfeer en representatieve architectonische taal waarmee de specifieke maatschappelijke betekenis wordt aangeduid. In de hedendaagse praktijk zijn deze verschillen grotendeels verdwenen; een logica van standaardisering laat verschillen in betekenis, maar ook in sfeer vervagen. Hoe spectaculairder de buitenkant van gebouwen, des te banaler schijnt hun binnenkant te worden.

Dit nummer van OASE wil deze verdwijning niet registreren maar gaat daarentegen op zoek naar een reeks strategieën en ontwerpinstrumenten voor het publieke stedelijke interieur. De samenstellers gaan op zoek naar architectonische projecten voor binnenruimten die hun betekenis ontlenen aan een specifieke aanpak en een herkenbaar element van auteurschap vertonen.

In the modern city, everyday life is increasingly moving towards the inside of buildings. The interiors of department stores, market halls, administration buildings, museums or theatres are part of the experience of the urban dweller. Every inner world of the city has its own character atmosphere and representative architectural language that supports its specific societal significance.
In contemporary practice, these differences have largely disappeared; the logic of standardization blurs differences in meaning, but also in atmosphere. The more the exterior of buildings is invested with spectacular gestures, the more banal their interiors seem to become.

Rather than registering this disappearance, this issue of OASE examines a range of strategies and design instruments for the public urban interior. The editors look for architectural projects for interiors that derive their significance from a specific approach and show a recognizable element of authorship.
