This uncommon two-part guide to the western frontier of the United States during the early period of national expansion era includes "Direction and charts for navigating the Ohio from Pittsburgh to its confluence with the Mississippi at Cairo, followed by a GEOGRAPHY with a separate title" (Streeter). Streeter also states that "several bibliographers claim that this work is based on Cramer's NAVIGATOR. I have compared several pages of these directions and charts and found that Gilleland's observations were quite independent of Cramer's." The reach of the geography section is quite wide, extending to Louisiana, Arkansas, and Missouri. Each region examined in the geography includes a description of the countryside, climate and natural resources, as well as a description of state and local government and advice to emigrants on land titles, etc., with a focus on Ohio. The GEOGRAPHY section bears its own titlepage, though the entire work is continuously paginated. "The book is not common" - Thomson.
