Earliest writing is in December 1861 and runs to October 1862. Daily entries detailing living conditions and military engagements. Here is the entry for June 21, "I went on picket at 6 in the morning. We had firing. We came off at 6 and we heard right smart firing at our left as we came away they shot at us." There are many notations of shooting and war conditions. The writing is both in pencil and ink. Some pages look like pencil has been copied over in ink. Included is a separate page written in the same hand.
