Musset was born in Paris from an upper-class but poor family. From a young age he had a fondnes of acting impromptu mini-plays based upon romances he had read. He has an extensive bibliography and several of his poems were used by French composers to write songs during the 19th Century. This collected works includes his play Les Caprices de Marianne, or the Moods of Marianne which was the basis to Jean Renoir's 1939 film The Rules of the Game. Other works include Lorenzaccio, a Romantic play which depicts Lorenzio de'Medici who killed Florence's tyrant, Allesandro de'Medici. It was originally intended to be a closet drama and therefore no staging took place during Musset's lifetime. Some of Musset's poems in this anthology include Portia, Le Lever, Madrid, Octave and Chanson. His short stories Emmeline, Les Deux Maitresses and Margot are among the eleven included. In a quarter morocco binding with gilt stamping to the spine. Externally, generally smart with rubbing to joints and head and tail of spine. Backstrip and Front board have detached from textblock though still firmly attached at rear. Gift inscription to recto of front endpaper from J du Mouteiller.
