Über diesen Titel:

Offbeat Tsukiji Market Guide provides an intimate look into the world’s largest wholesale fish and seafood market, located in the heart of Tokyo. Drawing from twelve years of experience in the Japanese fish business, author Ken Chan offers unique guided tours to foreign visitors, and his passion for sharing the secrets of this fascinating cultural treasure shines from every page.

Discover a world that, much like kabuki theater, involves intricate, dramatized dances—between buyers and sellers; wholesalers, middlemen, and retailers; and businesspeople, tourists, and security guards. The book’s offbeat tone is sardonic toward the politicians and the security regime, while conveying friendship and respect toward the more sincere players on this vast stage.

Learn both entertaining and informative details about Tsukiji Market, such as:

  • Its four-hundred-year history
  • Various ways to get to there
  • How to get off the market’s beaten tourist path
  • What to do when a security guard approaches
  • English names of the many types of fish and seafood
  • Which sushi restaurants are the best
  • The controversial plan to relocate the market

An invaluable resource for anyone planning to visit the Tsukiji fish market, Offbeat Tsukiji Market Guide also delivers an intriguing read for foodies as well as for anyone interested in food markets or Japanese culture.

About the Author:

Ken Chan began his career at Tokyo’s Tsukiji Market in 1978 selling salmon at an auction house, after graduating from Meiji University.
