Excerpt from Oil Firing for Kitchen Ranges and Steam Boilers
The principal object now in view is to give a brief description of the combustion of heavy residues or fuel oil in a cooking range for culinary purposes.
Some general remarks on the production of crude petroleum and fuel oil, together with other information relating thereto, is included, as, comparatively speaking, the average householder or hotel proprietor knows little or nothing of oil for firing purposes.
Previous to the war, fuel oil had not been used in the kitchen as far as the author is aware, and it was entirely due to the great scarcity and high cost of coal, brought about by war conditions, that means were devised for firing kitchen ranges with similar residues to those that are used for firing purposes in the furnaces of steam generators.
There are many excellent liquid-fuel burners on the market for steam-raising and other purposes, but neither in design nor method of application do they conform with the exacting requirements of the domestic kitchen, in simplicity, reliability, cleanliness, and range of power.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book introduces a method for using heavy residual oil as fuel in kitchen ranges and steam boilers. The author's focus, driven by the scarcity of coal during wartime, is on using this fuel for domestic purposes and presents the technical and logistical challenges of burning oil in existing ranges. The author provides a detailed history of oil production, combustion methods, and early attempts at oil-burning apparatus. The book then examines the principles of oil combustion, focusing on three methods: Open hearth, vaporizing, and atomizing. The problems of atomization, air supply, and temperature are considered, leading to the author's development of an oil burner for kitchen ranges that met the specified criteria. The book concludes with a detailed description of the author's oil-burning system's application to large institutional kitchens and steam boilers, including diagrams to demonstrate the apparatus and its installation. By presenting practical methods for using oil as an alternative to coal, this book will interest those researching combustion or fuel history and those seeking to understand the domestic use of heavy oils.
