The field of Experimental Mechanics has evolved substantially over the past 100 years. In the early years, the field was primarily comprised of applied physicists, civil engineers, railroad engineers, and mechanical engineers. The field defined itself by those who invented, developed, and refined experimental tools and techniques, based on the latest technologies available, to better understand the fundamental mechanics of materials and structures used to design many aspects of our everyday life. What the early experimental mechanician measured, observed, and evaluated were things like stress, strain, fracture, and fatigue, to name a few, which remain fundamental to the field today.
This book guides you through a chronology of the formation of the Society for Experimental Mechanics, and its ensuing evolution. The Society was founded in 1935 by a very small group of individuals that understood the value of creating a common forum for people working in the field of Applied Mechanics of Solids, where extensive theoretical developments needed the input of experimental validation. A community of individuals whothrough research, applications, sharp discussion of ideascould fulfill the needs of a nation rapidly evolving in the technological field. The founders defined, influenced, and grew the field of what we now call Experimental Mechanics. Written as a narrative, the author describes, based on input from numerous individuals and personal experiences, the evolution of the New England Photoelasticity Conference to what we know today as the Society for Experimental Mechanics (SEM). The narrative is the author's perspective that invites members of the Society to contribute to the story by adding names of individuals, institutions, and technologies that have defined the Society over the past 75 years.
Many of the key individuals who greatly influenced the advancement of the field of Experimental Mechanics are mentioned. These individuals are, in many ways, the founders of the field who have written textbooks, brought their teaching leadership and experiences to the classroom, worked on the Apollo project, and invented testing, evaluation, and measurement equipment that have shaped the fields of engineering. SEM's international membership is highly represented by those in academia, as you will read, although there has always been a powerful balance and contribution from industry and research organizations across the globe.
The role of the experimental mechanician is defined, in many ways, through the individual legacies shared in the following pages .legacies that define the past and create the foundation for what is now and what is to come.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor
After graduation from college, Cesar continued his Ph.D. on the Moiré method resulting in the first computer-supported processing of fringe patterns in 1968. He has continued this work in fringe pattern information decoding arriving to self-consistent computer-based algorithms that overcame most of the limiting factors that put constraints on other approaches guaranteeing maximum accuracy and computer efficiency. He applied these different developments to Moiré patterns, speckle patterns, holographic patterns in 2D and 3D applications, and MRI patterns. These applications cover a wide spectrum of scales, macro, micro, nanometer, sub-nanometer scales ,and the levels of atomic structures. In 2006, he introduced the detection of optical signals beyond the Rayleigh limit extending holography information recovery at the nano range. Besides working on developing optical techniques applied to experimental mechanics, he has utilized these techniques and other methods of experimental mechanics to solve important engineering problems in the areas of: fracture mechanics and fatigue of metals; fracture of fiber reinforced composites; and fracture of particle reinforced metals. He has done work on bio-mechanics in such areas as damage in knee-cap replacement and problems of the stability of the vertebral column, as well as the analysis of MRI records to obtain heart displacements and strains. He has also worked in wheel and rail contact problems, and more recently has done work in laser-adding manufacturing. In addition, he participated in two important projects of the U.S. space program: the Apollo IV and the Space Shuttle program.
Cesar has authored more than 350 papers and book chapters. His textbook Modern Experimental Mechanics of Solids: Theory, Techniques, Instrumentation and Applications was published by Wiley in 2012.
He has received many SEM awards, including the, Hetenyi, Lazan, and Frocht awards and the William M. Murray Medal. In 2011, he received the Theocaris Award from the Society for Experimental Mechanics in recognition of his pioneering efforts in developing and applying Moiré, holography, speckle interferometry methodologies, and microscopic versions of these techniques to Experimental Mechanics. In 2013, he was awarded the Honorary Membership of the Society for Experimental Mechanics―the highest honor the society awards. In 2011, the British Society for Strain Measurement awarded him and his co-workers the Fylde Electronic Price for best paper published in Strain in 2010. In 2013, a symposium titled Advances in Experimental Mechanics for Industrial Design and Automation was organized at the Polytechnic of Bari to honor his 90th birthday. It was at this symposium that he was presented with a lifetime achievement award. In 2014, the International Conference on Computational and Experimental Engineering and Sciences, at a meeting in Changwon, Korea, also presented him with a lifetime achievement award and in 2016 he received yet another lifetime achievement award, this time from the European Society for Experimental Mechanics at a meeting in Rhodes, Greece.
He is a lifetime member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and an honorary lifetime member of the Italian Association of Stress Analysis.
Dr Zimmerman's professional career began with the General Motors (GM) Research and Development (R&D) Center in 1993 where she created GM's Satellite Laboratory Network establishing over 100 GM Satellite Research Laboratories across the globe. In 1999, Zimmerman received a Fellowship to the National Academy of Engineering to work on STEM policy. From 2000–2012, she worked in the areas of advanced engineering and design, energy and environmental policy, and was responsible for creating and implementing GM’s energy and carbon management strategies across the globe. From 2008–2009, Zimmerman lived in Beijing, China managing GM China's Automotive Energy Research Center (CAERC) on the campus of Tsinghua University. She continued her energy and environmental policy work as an original member of the Chevy Volt Team, 2006–2012.
Dr. Zimmerman is currently the Executive Director of the Society for Experimental Mechanics and a 30-year member of the Society. Her educational background includes: Physics, Mechanical Engineering, and Engineering Mechanics. Her Ph.D. is in Engineering Mechanics from Michigan State University.
