The Old Maid (The 'Fifties) is the second in a set of four novellas called Old New York. All four books are based in the realm of upper class New York, and whilst some characters appears in several of the set, each novella focusses on a different decade has its own stand-alone story. Often regarded as the best in the collection, the Old Maid concerns cousins Charlotte and Delia as they dispute over the maternal rights of Charlotte's daughter Tina. The Old Maid was made into a film starring Bette Davies in 1939. Wharton was an American writer, whose experience of upper-class aristocracy contributed to precise portrayal of the the lives and morals of the Gilded Age. Sticker to rear pastedown.
