Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers

There are novels about childhood. And then there is Oliver Twist ? the Victorian equivalent of saying, ?You think you?ve had a tough week?? Published in this 2001 The Modern Library edition (ISBN: 9780375757846), and presented in Good condition as sold by Crappy Old Books, this is Dickens in full moral-outrage-meets-theatrical-flourish mode. Which is to say: workhouses, hunger, crime, hypocrisy, melodrama, redemption, and at least one request for more food that has echoed through literary history like a polite revolution. ?Please, sir, I want some more.? Victorian Britain: How very dare you. Written by Charles Dickens , the novel introduces us to poor Oliver ? orphan, outsider, walking embodiment of systemic failure ? and then proceeds to hurl him into London?s underbelly with the narrative enthusiasm of a man who has personally inspected the underbelly and would very much like you to see it too. Enter Fagin (charismatic criminal entrepreneur), the Artful Dodger (small but alarmingly competent), Nancy (tragic heart in a brutal world), and Bill Sikes (the human equivalent of a slammed door). Dickens does not so much write characters as release them. They stride, slouch, menace, plead, and monologue their way through foggy streets while society pretends everything is perfectly respectable. And that?s the genius of it: this is a novel about poverty and cruelty that became a staple of school syllabuses and Christmas adaptations. There is something magnificently ironic about a book exposing industrial-era misery being gifted with a satin ribbon. This Modern Library edition gives the story a clean, dignified frame ? which feels slightly rebellious, because Dickens himself was never tidy. He was loud, funny, furious, sentimental, theatrical, and deeply, inconveniently compassionate. He believed stories could shame a nation into behaving better. Imagine that. This copy, in Good condition, likely bears the faint marks of prior readership ? perhaps an earnest student, perhaps someone rediscovering Dickens after years of assuming him to be ?worthy.? (Spoiler: he?s also wildly entertaining.) It may have sat on a shelf thinking, ?One day they?ll realise I?m not just homework.? If you want a novel where social critique comes wrapped in unforgettable characters and just enough melodrama to power a minor opera, this is your book. Grim? Yes. Moral? Absolutely. Subtle? Not especially. Unforgettable? Completely. Adopt the orphan. Open the book. THIS BOOK BEARS THE CRAPPY OLD BOOKS STAMP. IF THAT IS UNDESIRABLE PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS. THE STAMP MARKS WHICH IS USUALLY TO THE FRONT AND BACK INNER PAGES SAYS SOLD BY CRAPPY OLD BOOKS WITH WEB SITE URL. IT IN NO WAY DEMINISHED FROM THE READING. IF YOU WANT A PRISTINE BOOK, PLEASE FIND ANOTHER BOOK IN BETTER CONDITION SOMEWHERE ELSE.…
