Title-page in red and black lettering with an engraving of the Emperor Constantine at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312 with the inscription "in hoc signo vinces." Engraved title-vignette. Decorative head and tailpiece and initials. The "Onomasticon" is a fascinating work marking the beginning of Bible geography which was laid by the fourth century Christian Church historian Eusebius. This work was known only in the translation by Jerome until the Jesuit Jacques Bonfrère published it in 1659. Text includes the "Onomasticon" in the original Greek in the middle of the page with two versions of the Latin on the sides. This work is complete with its large engraved fold-out map (ca. 4 feet in length) of the Holy Land by Bonfrère. Also includes "Locorum Terrae Sanctae Exactissima Descriptio" by the Dominican scholar Burchardus de Monte Sion. Dedicatory introduction by François Halma to the liberal preacher Gerbrandus van Leeuwen of the Amsterdam Athenaeum. There are also prefaces written by Jean Le Clerc, from the 1704 edition, and Jacques Bonfrère. Text in Latin and Greek. Slight soiling and age-toning on vellum. Closed tear at center of spine. Tail of spine slightly bumped. Worming along edges of endpapers only affecting the outer and upper margin of last page (not affecting text), and slightly the upper margin of pp. 185-190 (not affecting text). Tiny worming on upper margin of pp. 125-184 (not affecting text, but slightly affecting map). Stamp from previous owner on blank side of title-page. Water staining to margins of first few leaves, not affecting text. Usual rippling to leaves. Map slightly chipped along the edges, expertly reattached to binding. Errors in paging: pp. 152 and 160 misnumbered 512 and 560 respectively; pp. 163-164 omitted in numbering but total number of pages remains same due to other irregularities in paging. Binding and interior in overall good to good+ condition. Title-page includes: 'Opera Jacobi Bonfrerii S. J. Recensuit & Animadversionibus suis Auxit Joannes Clericus.
