Operation Cua Thu – The Last Mission in Vietnam
April, 1975 and, for the Americans, the Vietnam war will be over in hours. However, there was one mission, the final mission, still to accomplish.
Because of a set of exceptionally unusual circumstances, the CIA’s head of counterintelligence for Southeast Asia, Neil Barnett, has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to acquire a treasure trove of Intelligence from the Head of South Vietnamese Intelligence, Brigadier General Nguyen Dinh Ba. The conditions whereby the CIA will get this information are straightforward, simple, and at the same time exceptional. The CIA must provide the critical transportation link to bring General Ba out of Vietnam. They decided the best way to get the general is to use a Top Secret CIA gun boat, a Chinese Swatow, currently in the Philippines and disguised by flying the North Vietnamese flag. The only way this boat can get to Da Nang in time is to immediately assemble a crew, led by ex-Swift boat OinC Mike Cummins.
Lou Masterson cleverly weaves two distinct stories – one, sailing the Swatow to Da Nang and, two, General Ba and his two senior staff aides working their way from Saigon to Da Nang through North Vietnamese-held territory. Lou leads us through non-stop action as General Ba is picked up in the Da Nang harbor by the Swatow, then escapes at high speed, first from a helicopter then a North Vietnamese MIG.
The plan to bring General Ba out of Vietnam can be boiled down to “Go get him!” Nothing more. Mike is forced to make it up as he goes.
This story has twists and turns in line with the rampant chaos of the United States exiting Vietnam as well as the dynamics of a just-assembled crew on a remarkably fast, heavily armed gun boat operating in extremis.
Several unforeseen disappointments at the end of the story add unexpected dimensions and additional challenges.
The story revolves around an exceptionally dangerous mission with little chance for success led by a U. S. Navy crew that overcomes substantial odds and refuses to quit.
The action is non-stop; the twists and turns are constant; and the forces in play to stop General Ba from escaping and turning over his information are formidable.
