Artikelbeschreibung vom Verkäufer

Aerial view images all in fine condition. Housed in (original?) black cloth briefcase-style case (scuffed and worn, two or three metal hinges broken). Rare Aerial Photo Survey Atlas of Orange CountyAerial Photomaps, Inc., a Fullerton firm incorporated in 1964, produced this unusually ambitious Orange County Photo Map Book, based on large-format vertical aerial photography and keyed to the pagination of the 1964 Thomas Bros. street atlas. The atlas contains 180 aerial photographs: 147 at a scale of 1:6,000 and 33 at 1:12,000.Although this indexing demonstrates a clear practical relationship to the Thomas system, there is no solid evidence of any corporate connection, common ownership, or formal affiliation between Aerial Photomaps and Thomas Bros. Unlike the inexpensive, mass-produced Thomas Bros. street guides, these enormous aerial atlases were highly specialized productions, apparently issued in limited numbers for professional users such as government agencies, planners, real-estate developers, assessors, and road and transportation engineers. Indeed, the atlas itself makes its intended utility explicit, noting that Undeveloped land, vacant lots, accurate citrus tree counts and other vital physical features can be researched from your desktop. Realtors will spot listed property. At their unusually large scale, the photographs provided a remarkably detailed working record of subdivision, infrastructure, land use, agriculture, and development during a period of extraordinarily rapid transformation in mid-1960s Orange County.Such elaborate photographic atlases can be understood as predecessors of today s ubiquitous satellite imagery and digital mapping platforms. What once required an expensive, physically cumbersome publication assembled from hundreds of specialized aerial photographs can now be consulted almost instantly through Google Maps, Google Earth, and similar services, which combine aerial and satellite imagery with street maps and other geographic information. In this sense, Aerial Photomaps was attempting in print much the same thing that digital mapping now provides universally: an immediately accessible overhead view of the built and natural landscape tied to a familiar system of geographic reference. The present atlas is designated the 1964 Edition on its front cover, although no other edition is recorded in OCLC.RarityVery rare in the market. Only 5 examples in RBH: UCLA, UC Irvine, Cal State Long Beach, Cal State Fullerton, and Los Angeles Public Library.
