Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers

Up The Organization (1977) by Robert Townsend (Coronet) ISBN: 0340149868 | Condition: Good | Sold by Crappy Old Books Before ?disruption? became a LinkedIn chant and before every manager discovered they were, spiritually, a podcast host, there was Robert Townsend ? turning up with a rolled-up sleeve, a sharp pen, and the radical idea that most organisations could be improved by removing half the nonsense and letting adults behave like adults. Up The Organization is the kind of management book that doesn?t want to inspire you. It wants to annoy you into competence . Townsend (famously associated with Avis and the ?We try harder? era) writes like the rare executive who has actually been trapped inside the machine and decided, with calm fury, to dismantle it from the inside. This is not a book of soothing corporate affirmations. There are no ?journeys.? No ?stakeholders? having ?conversations.? No gentle diagrams of synergy swans. Instead you get brisk, funny, practical provocations: why meetings are often theatre, why bureaucracy breeds like mould, why performance reviews can be ritual humiliation in a suit, and why the best people tend to flee the moment they smell management culture being installed. The tone is gloriously old-school in the best way: plainspoken, contrarian, and oddly refreshing. Townsend treats the workplace like a place where things should actually happen ? work should be done, decisions should be made, and everyone should stop pretending that paperwork is a substitute for thinking. He?s impatient with status games, allergic to waffle, and deeply suspicious of anyone who needs three committees to approve a stapler. And yet, for all its bite, the book has a strangely humane centre. It argues ? repeatedly ? that organisations work better when they?re less obsessed with control and more interested in trust, clarity, and getting out of people?s way. Which is both inspiring and faintly horrifying, because it suggests the problems aren?t mysterious. They?re self-inflicted. We did this to ourselves. We could stop. We simply refuse. Reading it now is also a minor time-travel thrill: a 1977 paperback telling you, with unnerving accuracy, about problems you recognise instantly. The memos have changed into emails, the offices have turned into Slack channels, and the jargon has mutated into something even less edible ? but the core foolishness remains faithfully intact. If anything, Townsend feels even more relevant in the age of endless meetings that could have been a message that could have been ignored. Condition is Good , meaning it?s ready to be thrown into a bag, underlined, lent to a colleague (who will laugh nervously), or left ?accidentally? on someone?s desk as a passive-aggressive gift. It?s perfect for managers, reluctant managers, people who suspect they are living inside a slowly expanding spreadsheet, and anyone who has ever asked: Why is this so complicated? Sold by Crappy Old Books ? supplying vintage corporate insubordination in convenient paperback form.…
