The right hand side had the original herbal leaf stapled to it, staple now lacking, but it has left the 2 tiny typical holes near center of herbal leaf, 1 1/2" down from upper edge. [Text given under original Herbal leaf]: "Original Leaf dated 1560 A. D. From the library of Stanley S. Slotkin, Chairman of the Board, Abbey Rents. This Herbal, a first edition, was used by many of the Medical Men in Europe. It describes every known plant, herb, and animal life. Very carefully set down are the cures, virtues and precautions that should be taken. Many different owners have written their names over the pages and their comments are very interesting." The original leaf is pp. 559-560 with headings: In Lib. Quartum Dioscordis. And. Matthioli Comm. chapters 97-99 with 5 different botanical woodcuts near center of page: Millefolium Maius; Millefolium Minus; Verbascum Primum; Verbascum Secundum; Verbascum Tertium. Size of leaf is approx. 8 1/2 x 12 1/2"; left hand side (of p. 559) shows a lengthwise tan stain of 1-3", along the area where leaf was removed from book or fragment, scattered brown spotting to margins, not affecting the 5 attractive & detailed woodcuts. Paper shows a watermark with initials G (?) S (?). [Sample of Latin text]: "Stratiotes millefolium exiguus frutex, palmi altitudine, aut amplius assurgit: foliis avium pulli pennas imitantibus, brevi admodem, diffectoque foliorum exortu. Folio sylverstre cuminum simulant, praesertim brevitate, atque scabritia, breviora paulo: densiore umbella, & pleniore. Surculus in cacumine gerit exiguos, & capitula in modum anethi: flores parvos, & candidos. Nascitur in asperis agris, praecipue circa semitas. Eximii usus ad ulcera vetera, recentiaque, profluentem sanguinem, & fistulas." Folder shows some general age wear, creases to edges/corners. Part of a larger series of leaves from early books, Bibles, produced by or for Stanley S. Slotkin of abbey Rents; unfortunately, we have no other information about him, or about how many different items like this were assembled or distributed. Leaf is suitable for framing; we cannot guarantee the attribution, but all indications are those for a 16th century printing of this medical/herbal classic.
