Glazed and framed, the drawing is in very fine condition. Glazed and framed, the drawing is in very fine condition Larkin sat for his portrait in the attic of his house in Newland Park, Hull. In a letter to Judy Egerton, 30 July 1984, Larkin reports: "I have had my first few 'sittings'. with Mr Ocean, whose real name, he tells me, is Butler-Bowden. It's inevitably rather tedious; in fact I tend to fall asleep, quite without malice, but wch holds things up. The trouble is, he doesn't want to talk-reasonably enough-and if I talk he doesn't just grunt, but feels obliged to lay down his brush and concentrate on what I'm saying. Nor does he want me to look at the work in progress-again reasonably enough-but, M. went in to collect a cup once, & reported 'a likeness'. What I can see looks very brown to me-a sort of sepia study. He's using acrylic paint, wch no one can say won't fade to nothing in 50 years, he tells me. Fine." - Selected Letters of Philip Larkin 1940-1985 (London: Faber, 1992), p.713. Born in Sussex in 1951, Ocean studied at Canterbury Art School from 1970-1973. His first major solo exhibition was at the National Portrait Gallery in 1984. He has also exhibited at the Tate Liverpool and the Whitechapel Art Gallery in London. Many of Ocean's portrait commissions, including his 1984 portrait of Philip Larkin and his portrait of Paul McCartney, are in the National Portrait Gallery collection. In 2004 Ocean was elected a Royal Academician. Buchnummer des Verkäufers 21467
