Inhaltsangabe: The life of the heralded 39th Fighter Squadron, for much of World War II the leading American unit in victories, and Charles L. Lindbergh as he teams up with this crack squadron to treble its effective combat range.
From the Publisher: We are proud to present this history of the "Jug," the P-47 fighter and its contribution to the success of the air war in the Pacific in World War II. Dr. William Brevard Rogers takes us right into the cockpit as he flies his missions day after day against the Japanese Zeroes, or "Zekes" as they were called. Starting at New Guinea and on up to the conclusion of the conflict in the Philippines, we see the positive and negative aspects of the partnership between the pilot and the flying machine. In addition to the skill of the pilot, the range, the quantity of gasoline, the weight, the fire power, the maneuverability, and many other factors affected the success of each battle. A fascinating part of the story was the influence of Charles Lindbergh and his devising of a method for increasing the range of our aircraft. Lindbergh was on the "outs" with the federal government administration because of his overt political activism, such as warnings that we were unprepared, and he was refused the renewal of his military commission. Therefore his role was simply that of civilian advisor to the U.S. Air Force. His service was crucial as this book shows. Dr. Rogers was fortunate to have "Lindy" fly with him as "wing" on one of his missions, and we were fortunate to get the endorsement of his wife, Anne Morrow Lindbergh, who approved of our portrayal of her husband's role in the book. For the young and old, historians, military enthusiasts, researchers, and general interest readers, OUTCAST RED is a delightful and educational experience.
