'With Original Illustrations Of The Birds And Their Eggs'. Several of the other sellers of this book state that it was first published in 1880. As is the case with their copies mine does not have a date. However mine does have a plate on the inside front cover that you can see in the photographs I've provided. The plate is dated July 24th 1879. So, it would seem likely that this is a First Edition. The plate and book were given as an award to a student at Jedburgh School or Academy. The plate is signed by the Head Master. Jedburgh Academy was (perhaps still is) in Edinburgh, Scotland. You can see in the gilt design on the front cover the lettering Jedburgh Academy. The gilt lettering on the front cover and spine is still quite bright and in very good condition. There is also a two line square border framing in gilt on the front and back. You can see that there are a few small areas of scuffing. There's also a little bit of rub through at the corners. Otherwise the covers are in really nice condition. I've taken a picture of the inside cover and the marbled first front end paper in order to show you that the front inside cover is not currently affixed or glued to the text block. You should also notice that there aren't any tears or wear. All that needs to be done is to coat the inside spine with a glue and press the inside cover back into place. I prefer to let the buyer do any repairs. But this is a minor one. There is one other binding issue: the marbled first front end paper, the following first blank end paper, and the third page which is blank on its front but displays the frontispiece on its verso have a crack at the gutter coming off the bottom edge and running up about a third to a half way up. So you would likely want to glue that into place. After that the binding in this book is very solid. You can see that in the photograph of the two pages that I have provided. All the pages are nicely tight and there are no spaces/cracks to be found anywhere else in the book. The rear cover is very solidly bound. Other positives: the pages in the book are in excellent condition. I didn't see any creasing or dogeared corners. They are quite clean, I saw only a few tiny spots. There aren't any stains. There isn't any foxing. Also, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. And there aren't any markings. The aforementioned plate is the only attachment in the book.
