Beginning with the the Italian school, the art historian illuminates the stylistic features Italian, Dutch, German, French, and English painting, and sheds light on each school's key figures. Kaines-Smith was the first official lecturer at the National Gallery in London, and after a short stint lecturing at Cambridge, he directed the City Art Gallery in Leeds, before he was appointed keeper of the City Museum and Art Gallery in Birmingham. Prize bookplate to front pastedown. Ink inscription to recto of front free endpaper reads 'Part of the Holiday Drawing Prize. Eton Summer 1930'. In half calf binding over red cloth boards. Externally, generally smart. Calf is a little faded towards the joint of front board and the leather at the spine is has a few scuffs. Some minor wear to the extremities.
